South Station is the largest and busiest train station in Boston. This transportation hub located on the south-end of the financial district of downtown Boston services Amtrak (including the Acela express train to New York City) and MBTA commuter rails on its 13 tracks and is located on the "Red Line" of Boston's public subway system. South Station also serves as a significant bus terminal with 25 gates and 4 platforms providing access to a number of local, regional, and national carriers including the "Silver Line" bus to Logan Airport. Opened on January 1, 1899 as South Union Station, South Station was the busiest train station in the world by 1910.
