Named for the local Spanish-American war hero General Edward Lawrence Logan in 1956, Logan International Airport is located on the site of Jeffery Field which exclusively served the Massachusetts Air Guard and Army Air Corps from 1923 through 1927. Prior to 1956, the airport was known as Boston Airport thus maintaining the IATA airport code of "BOS". Logan Airport hosted it's first jumbo jet in 1970 and has expanded to its current size of 2,384 acres by filling in parts of Boston Harbor, assimilating two small islands in the process. The entirety of all six runways can be seen from a 12 story central control tower which dominates the East Boston skyline.
More than 27 million passengers fly though Logan Airport each year making it the seventh busiest airport in the United States and one of the 20 busiest in the world. Today, Logan service flights to the US, Canada, Cape Verde Islands, Caribbean, Europe, and Mexico. Ground transportation to the airport's four terminals is provided by private limo and taxi services as well as regional bus carriers and the MBTA's Silver Line bus, Blue Line subway cars (via free shuttle bus), and water shuttle/taxi services. Nearly 1,600 people are employed by Logan Airport in various capacities.
