Charles/MGH StationCharles/MGH station services both the Ashmont and Braintree branches of the Red Line, a primarily north-south running appendage of the MBTA's public light rail system which, built in 1897, is the nation's oldest subway system. Originally named Charles Station, this stop first opened on February 27, 1932 and was later renamed Charles/MGH in December of 1973. The current building, a modern glass-enclosed structure located above a traffic island situated at the intersection of Charles and Cambridge streets, was completed on February 17, 2007 - almost exactly 75 years to the day the first Charles station opened. Charles/MGH station is handicapped accessible with close proximity to Mass General Hospital and is adjacent to Longfellow Bridge which spans the Charles River to connect Boston and Cambridge.
