Boston Public LibraryWith a circulation of more than 15 million books and periodicals, Boston Public Library is the largest municipal library in the United States and the third largest overall behind the Library of Congress and Harvard University. Boston Public Library opened as the country's first public library on March 20, 1854. The library, hosting 16,000 volumes, quickly outgrew the former schoolhouse in which it resided and relocated to Boylston Street in 1858 then to its current location, the McKim Building, on Copley Square in 1895. The McKim Building is a pink granite structure in the Renaissance style. A second building, the Johnson Building, was added in 1972.

Boston Public Library offers free Wi-Fi and plug in ethernet. Borrowing privileges, as well as access to more than 1.7 million rare books, manuscripts, and works of art are granted to all Massachusetts residents.
