The original Old West Church was built in 1737, however, that building was razed by British troops in 1775 when it was suspected that it's tower was being used by revolutionaries to send messages across the Charles River to Cambridge. The current structure was erected in 1806, designed by the same architect that built the Charles Street Meeting House just two years earlier. The Old West Church briefly served as a branch of the Boston Public Library although it is most famous for it's hosting a sermon where Jonathan Mayhew first coined the phrase "no taxation without representation".
