Boston's city hall is a nine level, rectangular, brick and concrete structure that serves as the home of the city's municipal government. The building resembles an inverted pyramid and was designed by Kallmann McKinnell & Knowles, a threesome of Columbia University professors whose design was chosen from 256 submissions in a 1962 nationwide contest. Construction took place from 1963 through 1968. City hall is located in the heart of the Government Center complex, a vast sea of brick and elevation changes conceptualized by IM Pei in the mid 20th century. Boston city hall has appeared in a number of films, most notably many scenes from "The Departed" starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Boston's own Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg.
