Kenmore Square
Kenmore Square is a commercial area of restaurants, ticket agencies, banks, and convenience stores located adjacent to the campus of Boston University at the intersection of Beacon Street and Commonweath Avenue. The land on which the "square" resides was originally a swamp that was filled and connected to the city in 1890 as part of the Back Bay landfill project. Most famously, Kenmore Square is home to the Citgo Sign, a 60 ft by 60 ft animated illuminated billboard built in 1940 that sits atop a midrise building. Although separated by the Massachusetts Turnpike, Kenmore Square is commonly associated with Fenway Park as the sign is visible over the Green Monster. Kenmore Square hosts an underground subway and bus station that is currently undergoing significant renovations. It is a primary hub for the Green Line as it is the last stop shared by all four branches routing tourists and commuters in and out of the downtown area.
Don't schedule Kenmore Square as a stand alone destination as there's not much to do here and it's a bit out of the way from other attractions unless you're already heading to Fenway Park for a concert, tour, or Red Sox game. Do try to catch a glimpse of the Citgo sign at night as it's truly unique... on a clear night you should be able to see it from many locations in and around Boston.
