Community BoatingCommunity Boating, Inc. operates a facility located on the Charles River Esplanade, adjacent to the Salt and Pepper Bridge, that provides sailing instruction and boat rentals to the general public. The rental fleet currently includes a variety of small sailboats as well as windsurfers and kayaks. Community Boating is the country's oldest public boating program, founded in 1936 as a youth after school program by Boston School Committee member Joseph Lee, Jr. In 1942, the center opened its doors to adult cooperative members who were required to provide 50 hours or more of volunteer service at the boathouse. Presently, approximately 250 volunteer members help keep this not-for-profit organization accessible to all. Although paid memberships and day rentals are the norm (at very reasonable rates), individuals with special needs receive free access to the facilities and services. The youth program remains virtually free with an annual membership cost of just $1. Community Boating, Inc. has been named both the "Boat Club of the Year" and the "Yacht Club of the Year" by Popular Boating Magazine and US SAILING respectively.
