The Charles Playhouse hosts the second permanent installation of the popular Blue Man Group. Originally set to stage at New York's Astor Place Theatre in 1991, the Blue Man Group opened their show "Tubes" in Boston in 1995. The production is set in an intimate theatre which features a small stage with a trio of mute performers masked in blue grease paint, bald caps, and black clothing. The Blue Men employ a variety of home grown instruments and props for comedic relief while lighting effects, video, and paper (yes, lots of paper) enhance the overall concert experience. Brave audience members who reserve seats in the first few rows of the playhouse receive ponchos to wear during the performance... the Blue Men can be quite messy at times. Shows run nightly and tickets are generally available on short notice.
We highly recommend attending the Blue Man Group on your visit to Boston as it's a truly unique and entertaining performance. You may want to leave the kids with a babysitter as they probably wouldn't understand the subtle humor. Although the Blue Men may seem cartoonish, there's no doubt that the target audience is young to middle-aged adults. Also worth noting is that there's a lot of strobe-lighting effects in the Tubes performance so if you have any sensitivity you may want to pass.
The map and Blue Man Group information on this page were accurate at the time they were added to this website. Just in case things have changed, we recommend that you confirm rates, hours, and location prior to planning your visit.
